Tasia Fortune Case Update: Man Arrested for Murder After Her Death if Officially Ruled a Homicide

There Has Finally Been a Major Break in the Tasia Fortune Case

More than a month after 29 year old Tasia Fortune was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant home in Jackson, Mississippi, there has been a dramatic development in the investigation.

Tasia's death has officially been ruled a homicide.

And police have made an arrest.

On September 11, 2026, the Jackson Police Department announced the arrest of 51 year old Jarques Ratliff, also reportedly known as "Jock", in connection with Tasia's death.

Multiple news organizations report that Ratliff has been charged with murder.

But perhaps the most significant part of the announcement is this:

Police say the investigation is not finished.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said investigators expect addiional arrests.

For Tasia's family and the thousands of people who have followed this case since August, this is the development they have spent weeks waiting for.

But it may also be only the beginning.

The Medical Examiner Has Officially Ruled Tasia Fortune's Death a Homicide

This is one of the most important developments since Tasia was discovered.

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office officially classified Tasia's death as a homicide on Sepemeber 10th.

That determination fundamentally changes what can now be said about this case.

When I first wrote about Tasia, I was careful not to call her death a murder or homicide because the medical examiner had not yet made that determination.

Now we know:

Tasia Fortune's death was a homicide.

Jackson Police had already begun treating the case as a potential homicide while awaiting the medical examiner's findings.

Chief Brackney told the Jackson City Council on September 8th that investigators had apporached the case as a homicide "from day one" unless the medical examiner determined otherwise.

Who is Jarques Ratliff?

Police identified the man arrested as 51 year old jarques Ratliff.

wlbt reports that Ratliff is also known as "jock."

Police have revealed relatively little about him so far.

What they have confirmed is significant, however.

Chief Brackney said there was an "association" between Ratliff and Tasia Fortune.

Exactly what that means has not been publically disclosed.

Police have deliberately declined to explain the nature or extent of the relationship between the two.

That leaves one of the biggest question in this case unanswered:

How did Jarques Ratliff know Tasia Fortune?

Investigators presumably know considerably more about that relationship than they are currently willing to release.

At this stage of an active homicide investigation withholding some information is not unusual.

Ratliff is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

How Police Arrested Jarques Ratliff

According to Chief Brackney, investigators had secured two search warrantsand an arrest warrant connected to Ratcliff.

Police executed the search warrants on September 11th.

Ratliff was reportedly not at the location when officers arrived.

Investigators later encountered him walking along Capitol Street in west Jackson.

He was taken into custody.

The arrest came only hours after the medical examiner officially classified Tasia's death as a homicide.

Police say the warrants and arrest represent significant progress in the investigation but they are emphasizing that the case remains active.

Ratliff has Reportedly Been Charged With Murder

CBS News and CNN reported that Ratliff was arrested on a murder charge in connection with Tasia Fortune's death.

This is an important distinction from the arrest we discussed previously in this case.

Earlier in the investigation, Terence Anderson, 65, was interviewed by detectives regarding Tasia's death.

Anderson reportedly acknowledged that he and Tasia had argued before her death but denied involvement.

he was subsequently arrested on an unrelated firearm possession charge.

At that point, jackson Police had not confirmed Anderson as an official person of interest, and he ahd not been charged in connection with Tasia's death.

The arrest of Jarques Ratliff is different.

Ratliff's arrest is directly connected to the homicide investigation, and police have announced a murder charge.

As of this update, authorities have not publicly explained what role, if any, Anderson may have in the continuing homicide investigation.

Police Interviewed Nearly 15 People

The arrest did not come out of nowhere.

According to Chief Brackney, police have interviewed nearly 15 people while investigating Tasia's death. Police have also collected forensic evidence and spent hundreds of hours working the case.

What that forensic evidence consists of has not been publicly revealed.

That raises several important possibilities investigators may eventually address:

Was DNA recovered?

Was evidence recovered from the scene?

Did investigators obtain phone records?

Did surveillance fottage help establish Tasia's movements?

Did witness statements identify Ratliff?

What evidence led investigators specifically to him?

At the moment, police aren't saying.

But the fact that investigators obtained search warrants and an arrest warrant before the medical examiner's final homicide determination suggests authorities had already developed evidence they considered significant enough to seek judicial authorization.

Police Say More Arrests Are Coming

This may be the biggest unanswered pieve of the September 11th announcement.

Chief Brackney said:

Additional arrests are expected.

That immediately raises another question:

Do police believe more than one person was involved in Tasia's death?

Authorities have not publicly explained what they mean by additional arrests.

We do not know whether police believe multiple people participated in Tasia's killing, whether someone assisted afterward, whether someone withheld information, or whether the anticipated arrests related to other offenses uncovered during the investigation.

We should not assume the answer.

But the statement makes one thing clear:

Police do not consider the arrest of Jarques Ratliff the conclusion of this investigation.

Chief Brackney described the arrest as one step in a continuing case.

For those of us following Tasia's story, that means there may be considerably more information still to come.

What Was the Motive?

We don't know.

Police have not announced a motive.

This is particularly significant because of the enormous public discussion surrounding the circumstances in which Tasia was discovered.

Tasia was a Black woman found hanging from a tree in Mississippi.

It was impossible for many people to see those circumstances without thinking about the horrific history of lynching and racial terrorism in Mississippi and throughout the American South.

Chief Brackney directly acknowledged those concerns during the September 11th press conference.

But investigators have not announced evidence establishing that Tasia's lilling was racially motivated.

They also have not announced another motive.

We therefore need to distinguish between two separate facts:

Tasia Fortune was murdered.

We do not yet kow why she was murdered.

Those are two very different questions.

Police Have Not Called This a Lynching

The imagery surrounding Tasia's death understandably produced national outrage and fear.

But investigators have not announced that her killing was a lynching or hate crime.

Chief Brackney acknowledged Mississippi's history and the broaderlens through which the public is viewing Tasia's death while emphasizing that police can only publicly state what is supported by evidence.

That is the responsible position for investigators to take.

We should demand a complete investigation into every possibility-including whether race played any role-without deciding the motive before evidence establishes it.

Tasia deserves the truth.

Whatever that truth ultimately is.

Tasia's Mother Reacts to the Arrest

Perhaps the most heartbreaking response to Friday's news came from Tasia's mother Christy Spivey.

After police informed her that an arrest had been made, Spivey said she began crying and repeatedly thanked investigators.

But even with an arrest, Tasia's family still has enormous questins.

Spivey said investigators had not told her what they motive was.

She also did not know whether DNA or other forensic evidence contributed to the arrest.

perhaps surprisingly, Spivey said she did not recognize Ratliff.

She has reportedly begun asking Tasia's friends whether they knew him.

That makes the undisclosed "association" between Tasia and Ratliff even more intriguing.

How did they know one another?

How long had they known one another?

How frequently were they in contact?

And what happened between them before Tasia died?

Thoe answers have not yet been made public.

Tasia Was a Mother of Four

As more reporting has emerged, we have also learned more about Tasia herself.

She was the mother of four children.

Her life had not always been easy.

According to reporting by the Associated Press, Tasia spent time in foster care as a child and moved among group homes duing her teenage years before eventually running away to Mississippi.

In recent years, she had reportedly experienced periods of homelessness.

But according to her family, Tasia was trying to rebuild her life.

She had talked about starting a cleaning business.

her mother has consistently maintained that Tasia would not have taken her own life.

The medical examier's homicide determination now establishes that her death was caused by another person.

For her family, however, knowing that still does not answer the most painful question:

Why?

August 3: Tasia is Found Behind a Vacant Home

Tasia's case began on August 3, 2026.

Police responded to the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in west Jackson.

Behind a vacant residence, they discovered Tasia's body hanging from a tree.

Initially, authorities did not know, or at least had not publicly announced, her identity.

The hinds County Coroner's Office subsequently identified her as 29 year old Tasia Fortune.

The discovery immediately generated questions.

Why was she at that property?

How did she get there?

Who was with her?

Was she killed at the location?

Or was her body brought there afterward?

Those questions became even more urgent because of the manner in which Tasia was discovered.

More than a month later, we finally have confirmation of something her family had long feared:

Her death was not self-inflicted.

it was a homicide.

A Case That Quickly Drew National Attention

Tasia's story did not remain a local Mississippi case.

The circumstances surrounding her death attracted national attention.

Civil rights advocates became involved.

Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes requested federal assistance.

People across the country demanded answers.

And Tasia;s mother repeatedly pushed for transparency.

At times, the pace of the investigation frustrated those following the case.

The autopsy had reportedly been completed weeks before the official determination was announced.

But behind the scenes, Jackson Police say investigators were treating the case as a homicide and continuing to build it.

Friday's arrest suggests that work was progressing even while the public heard relatively little.

An Arrest Is NOt the End of Tasia's Story

It would be easy to look at Friday's arrest and say:

Case solved.

But it isn't/

An arrest is the beginning of the criminal justice process, not the end.

Jarquest Ratliff is accused of a crime. He is presumed innocent unless and until proved guilty.

Prosecutors will ultimately have to establish their case is court.

And investigators themselves are telling us their work is not finished.

There may be more arrests.

They may be more evidence.

There may be additional people wbose roles have not yet been publicly revealed.

There will almost certainly be more information about Tasia's final hours.

And eventually, we may learn why she was killed.

From an Unexplained Death to a Homicide Investigation

When Tasia was found on August 3, almost everything about her death was uncertain.

Was this suicide?

Was this homicide?

Was this a hate crime?

Was someone else involved?

Was the horrifying ammer in which she was discovered connected to the motive for her death?

For weeks, there were far more questions than answers.

Now one of those questions has finally been resolved.

Tasia Fortune did not die by suicide. Her death has officially been classified as a homicide.

And a man who police say knew her has now been arrested and accused of murder.

But that revelation creates an entirely new set of questions.

Who else might have been involved?

Why do investigators expect additional arrests?

What evidence connects Ratliff and Tasia?

And most importantly:

Why was Tasia Fortune killed?

Justice for Tasia Means Finding the Whole Truth

Tasia's mother has repeatedly asked people not to forget her daugher.

That is especially important now.

True crime cases often receive enormous attention during the mystery stage.

Then an arrest happens.

The public movs on.

But an arrest is not justice.

Just requires determining what happened.

It requires holding the person, or people, responsible accountable through the legal process.

It requires answers for Tasia's children, parents, sisters and everyone else who loved her.

And if multiple people were involved, it requires determining the role each person played.

Police have told us explicitly that this investigation continues.

So our attention should continue too.

Say her name: Tasia Fortune.

She was 29 years old.

She was a mother of four.

She was trying to rebuild her life.

And now authorities have officially determined that someone took that life from her.

The question is no longer Tasia's death was a homicide.

Who was responsible and why?
